SERDANG, 21 July – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) convened more than 200 researchers, industry leaders, orchard operators and policymakers from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia at the International Durian Seminar 2026 (IDS2026) to bolster the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of Southeast Asia’s durian industry.

Chairman of the International Durian Seminar 2026, Dr. Abdul Aziz Zakaria, said Malaysia’s durian industry is entering a period of dynamic growth, driven by rising global demand following the implementation of the Malaysia–China Fresh Durian Export Protocol.

“Despite the growing opportunities, the industry continues to face challenges including rising production costs, fluctuating farm-gate prices, increasingly stringent export standards and stronger competition from other producing countries,” he said.

He emphasised that greater innovation, knowledge exchange and stronger collaboration among researchers, industry players and government agencies are imperative to ensure Malaysian durian remains competitive in the global premium fruit market.

Meanwhile, UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations), Prof. Dr. Shamsul Bahri Md Tamrin, said the seminar reflects the university’s commitment to championing high-value agriculture through research, innovation and knowledge transfer.

He noted that global demand for durian continues to surge, fuelled by growing consumer interest and the rapid development of export markets.

“Malaysia is well positioned to strengthen its standing as a leading producer of premium durian through the development of superior varieties, high-impact research, sustainable farming practices and strategic partnerships between universities, government and industry,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Shamsul Bahri added that the industry’s future growth should prioritise developing climate- and disease-resilient planting materials, smart farming technologies, sustainable nutrient and pest management, post-harvest handling, cold chain logistics, food safety, traceability systems and value-added durian products.

Held under the theme “From Roots to Legacy: Cultivating Knowledge, Harvesting Futures,” the seminar was organised by the Universiti Putra Malaysia Alumni Association (PAUPM). The event also featured an exhibition showcasing more than 50 local durian varieties and species, alongside a durian buffet celebrating Malaysia’s premium cultivars.
