UPM ranked 61st in Webometrics Ranking

By Khairul Anuar Muhamad Noh

Serdang: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is ranked 61st in the Webometrics Ranking Web of World Universities, an indicator for higher education institutions (HEIs) web presence.

Webometrics evaluated more than 20,000 HEIs worldwide, including 90 (20 public and 70 private) HEIs from Malaysia in July 2014.

This year, the ranking has positioned UPM at 136th place for the web openness, compared to 193rd (presence) and 216th (openness) places in 2013. UPM has also been listed in the world’s 200 best universities for the two indicators.

Apart from those two indicators, Webometrics also assessed the impact and excellence of the websites. Overall, UPM managed to secure its place to be among the world’s 590 best university websites based on the ranking for three consecutive years since 2009 and placed
9th best in Southeast Asia.

‘Presence’ assesses the number of websites using the university domains (including subdomains and directories) which are indexed by Google. It also assesses each website, including its Google-approved formats, static and dynamic pages as well as other rich files.

Meanwhile, ‘Openness’ assesses the number of files, such as Adobe Acrobat document (.PDF), Adobe PostScript (.ps, .eps), Microsoft Word (.doc .docx) and Microsoft Powerpoint(.ppt, .pptx) for certain displays, such as academic articles that can be searched through Google Scholar.

Webometrics is a rating system in which the visibility of the website is used as an indicator to measure the universities performance globally and it is conducted by Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC).

Webometrics tabulates its ranking based on four key indicators; visibility (50%), size (20%), rich files (15%), scholar (15%) and they are assessed every six months, starting in January and July each year.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohd. Fauzi Ramlan, said all indicators factored in the university's commitment to teaching, research findings, international prestige, networking with the community, including industry and various sectors of the economy.

"The rating which was tabulated in July 2014 marked a remarkable increase compared to the previous year’s achievement. This indicates UPM initiative not only to improve its websites, but also indirectly its performance in Webometerics Ranking" he said.
