SERDANG - The ruminant farming community is made aware of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) problem and its impact on the health of livestock and human in a seminar titled ‘Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness among Ruminant Farmers’.
“The issue of antimicrobial resistance is a global problem shared by both human and animals due to the increase in bacterial population that is resistant towards antimicrobials. If this resistance issue is not solved, it can lead to infections that cannot be cured by antimicrobials (antibiotics) thus, increasing medical cost, prolonging recovery and may lead to death.”
“Antimicrobial is regarded as a vital medicine in veterinary medicine. The farmers’ role in ensuring that this problem is controlled through prudent use of the antimicrobials in their livestock is crucial,” said the head of the programme, Dr. Rozihan Mansor.
This seminar was the second series of Hari Bersama Penternak 2017 (A Day with Farmers) organised by the Ladang Angkat committee, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on 7 September 2017 in FVM to achieve the objectives of MyOHUN Community based Extension Project.
The programme which was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Selangor was headed by Dr. Rozaihan Mansor. The programme involved 20 Ladang Angkat and ruminant farmers around Selangor.
