SERDANG, May 26 – Some 70 students from the Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), in collaboration with the Institute of Agriculture and Food Policy Studies (IKDPM) UPM and Malaysia Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF), held a program “Sembang Ekonomi Bersama MIDF” to expose students to current economic issues right from the views of industry experts.

The program’s director, Lee Zen Yi said the students from the Malaysian Economy (ECN3161) Course were able to interact with guest speakers on current issues facing the country.

“The forum is MIDF’s outreach program which intends to expose students of higher learning institutions, particularly students who major in Economy, to understand about the real economic issues facing the country.

“Some of the interesting issues touched during this program were the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Goods and Services Tax (GST), ringgit depreciation and household debts,” he said.

The guest speakers were MIDF Chief Economist of the Research Department, Dr. Kamaruddin Mohd Nor and his colleague, Aslam Ilman Zulkiflee who is also an economist.

Meanwhile, the program started with a brief introduction about MIDF by Dr. Kamaruddin, TPPA presentation by Encik Aslam and issues affecting the country’s current economy by Dr. Kamaruddin.

The program was well-received, judging from overwhelming response from UPM’s Economic-majored students, through their active participation during a question-and-answer (Q&A) session with the panelists.

A forum, moderated by Siew Jun Xiong, was also held where the Q&A session also saw active response from students. All questions asked by the moderator and participants were answered comprehensively by the panelists.

Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) which was incorporated on March 30, 1960 mainly for the purpose of ensuring access to financing for manufacturing-based small- and medium-sized enterprises as part of Malaysia’s strategies to accelerate the industrial sector development, celebrated its 55th anniversary in March 2015. - UPM
