UPM FRSB receive Volunteer Malaysia Award

PETALING JAYA, Dec 9 – Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Faculty of Design and Architecture (FRSB) was selected as the recipient for the Volunteer Malaysia Award (Prime Minister’s Award) under the category of Best Volunteer Initiative - Dre1M 2016 at the Volunteer Malaysia Awards ceremony.

The inaugural award-presentation ceremony, organized by 1Malaysia For Youth (Im4u), was to show appreciation and recognition to individuals and groups who had contributed greatly towards volunteerism activities in Malaysia.

Also present at the event was Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

FRSB received the award based on its successful initiative in conducting Teratak Semai Fasa 4.0 project that focused on efforts to build four unit of houses for the Semai tribe in Tapah and Sungai Kampar, Perak.

The houses, built using the self-build housing concept, involved 22 volunteer students and alumni members as well as 10 FRSB staff, led by Assoc. Prof. Ar. Razali Mohammad Fared Meor Razali.

The construction of the Orang Asli units started from January 2015 until April 2016.

Along with other researchers  Dr. Wan Rihani Wan Mohamed, Dr Shafizal Maarof and Dr. Mohamad Fakri Zaky Ja’afar, Assoc. Prof. Ar. Razali Mohammad Fared designed a prototyped selfl-build affordable home using cement, PVC pipes, woods, metal deck roofings and woven bamboo walls or bertam leaves.

These volunteers who were staff, students and alumni members of UPM’s Design And Architecture Faculty, worked closely together with the Orang Asli community and Ipoh Municipal Council (MBI) to build the houses.

Assoc. Prof. Ar. Razali Mohammad Fared said the project focused on the construction of houses for the Orang Asli community in Tapah, Perak.

"Under Teratak Semai Fasa 1.0 project, we suceeded in building four units of houses in Kampung Bt. 16, Jalan Pahang, Tapah, while under Teratak Semai Fasa 2.0, another six units were built in the same village.

"Under Teratak Semai Fasa 2.0, again we suceeded in building six units in Kampung Bt. 5, Jalan Pahang, Tapah," he said.

Other award categories at the event were the Lifetime Achievement Award, Superelawan Of The Year Award, Best Social Media for A Volunteer Initiative Award, Special Jury Award and the iM4U Best Humanitarian Song Award. – UPM.
