Students undertake a course creatively under new norms

A total of 60 Year 1 students from the Tun Dr. Ismail College (KTDI), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), have joined the SmartLEAD 2021 leadership course in hybrid mode for six days, ending today.

The course, organised by the College Representative Council, KTDI, aims to uncover leadership talents and develop leaders for leadership roles at the college and university.

KTDI Principal, Prof. Dr. Aminuddin Hassan, said it was the first leadership course in hybrid mode at UPM.

He hoped the course would develop participants into leaders in the college, university and country.

"’Even the best can be improved’, hopefully, more excellence can be achieved, and that Tun Dr. Ismail College will continue to flourish at UPM and the national and international levels," he said.

Course adviser, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yap Wing Fen, said the student leadership organisation at college is essential for students in forming their personality to complement their academic excellence.

"Thus, to address the need, we took the initiative to organise the SmartLEAD 2021 leadership course in hybrid mode to provide a platform to students to increase their added values in the aspect of soft skills, especially in leadership," he said.

Course director, Suzaifi Sukri, said the course was changed into hybrid mode to suit the new norms due to the current pandemic. It was conducted successfully, achieving its objectives.

"Although the SmartLEAD Leadership Course was not able to be conducted physically, with the creativity of the committee members and guidance from the advisors, I am confident that the input received by the participants through this hybrid course is as good as the face-to-face course," he said.

KTDI Year 1 Student, Muhammad Nazreen Samuri, who joined the course, said the course was a proactive step as it allows the participants to get to know the other KTDI students and learn many leadership skills from those who are more experienced.

"This course is exciting even if it was conducted online. I am grateful because the other participants and I can learn many new things about leadership," he said.

The invited speakers for the Leadership and Personality and KTDI Champion slots are the alumni of KTDI, Dr. Mohd Mokrish and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurul Hahah. - UPM
