SERDANG, August 12: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan has been accorded the 2014 MASISWA Sports Figure, the second individual to have received the award which was introduced in 2011.

He received a plaque and a certificate which were presented by MASISWA Special Project Bureau Chairman, Michael Yiew who is also Nilai University Head of Sports Centre.

MASISWA secretary-general, Ruzli Zairazi said Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi was selected as the recipient of  MASISWA (Private Institution Higher Learning Sports Council) Sports Figure because of his vast contributions for the development and progress of sports at private institutions of higher learning, particularly when he was serving the Higher Education Ministry from 2006 to 2012.

He said, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi was the pioneer in the setting up of MASISWA  which aimed for sports development at private institutions in a more organized manner so that the athletes could be more active in sports although they were learning at higher learning institutions.

Ruzli who is also Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) sports officer said it was Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi who picked the name  MASISWA.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Fauzi expressed his gratitude for being named the recipient, saying that MASISWA has become an integral component for sports development at IPTS.

“MASISWA has so far produced many athletes to represent the country.

“Higher learning institutes are just the place for sports development… not one that will see the demise of sports or stifle the athletes’ interest to take up sports as their career,” he said.

Such institutions had given emphasis in producing thinking athletes, he said.

“It is my ardent hope that more activities can be lined up by MASISWA to scout for more sports talents at higher learning institutions who can represent the country,” he added. – UPM.
