Junior Aerospace Scientist rekindles aerospace interest for kids

SERDANG, March 22 - Some 34 children, aged between 8 and 12 years, took part in a Junior Aerospace Scientist program which saw several interesting related activities being held such as making of airplanes, helicopters and rockets using papers and straws, demonstration of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and air balloon.

The programme was held in conjunction with school holiday at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) by the Aerospace Society Malaysia (AEROS) with the cooperation of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, UPM.

Programme Director, Dr. Dayang Laila Abang Abdul Majid said the main objective of the programme was to attract the interest and develop the talents of children in scientific fields, especially those related to aerospace.

She said with fast development of the Malaysian aerospace industry, there is a need to inspire and mold the next generation of aerospace scientists, engineers and explorers.

The response towards this program was overwhelming, with all seats grabbed up within just two days after the program was advertised. This was expected since the opportunity for children to join this kind of aerospace program is very limited.

Due to overwhelming response and positive reactions from parents of participating children, AEROS Malaysia will organize similar programs in the future, especially during school holidays.

This programme made its debut for AEROS Malaysia which was set up last January. It was successfully organized by several members of the society who are also lecturers and students of UPM’s Department of Aerospace Engineering.

Membership for AEROS Malaysia is open to all aerospace professionals and also students who are enrolled in education programs related to aerospace.

AEROS Malaysia expressed its gratitude to the Faculty of Engineering for its cooperation in making the program a success.
