SERDANG, April 29 – Soft serve ice cream based on palm milk and honey emerged as the winner at the New Product Launch Day Competition 2019.

The product was produced by Palmney Sdn. Bhd. based on the work of a group of final year students from the Department of Food Technology, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

The representative of the group, Si Hoo Wan Kei, said the idea to produce the product came about when they replaced the ice cream formulation ingredient with palm milk in order to create a new flavour.

"We want to elevate the consumption of palm milk apart from creating products that are healthy and suitable for every generation," she said.

She said the lack of advanced technology to support their idea of creating ice cream with mango and glutinous rice flavour was a challenge that they had to face in finishing their product. As a result, they decided to replace the original ingredients.

Other members of the Palmney Sdn. Bhd. group are Vadi D/O Again, Kirthana D/O Chandran, Nuraisyah Zulkeffeli, Aimi Zafirah Kamaruddin, Muhammad Azri Abd Rahim, Adlen Qareena Mohammad Azreen and Lim Jwee Yie.

They took home cash prize of RM400 and a hamper.

They hoped that palm oil-based products can be further promoted, marketed and favoured to further develop the palm oil industry.

The competition provided the opportunity for FSTM students to understand the development process of new products that have the potential to be commercialised with the use of local ingredients such as palm oil and desiccated coconut residue in depth. - UPM
