ICT

 

ICT services manage the University’s ICT infrastructure and offer a range of facilities and services to assist the UPM community with their ICT-related needs. The campus network connects together into one virtual campus all offices, laboratories, buildings and wireless hotspots that are located across the campus – Serdang and Bintulu. The University’s intranet provides access to the Internet and other online resources including Library e-resources/e-journals and electronic Student Information System. Other services that are provided to the campus community include e-learning, videoconferencing, academic software site licenses and training.

 

Internet Access

 

UPM is one of the Public Universities (UA) categorized as Research Universities in Malaysia. In line with this status, UPM Internet access services must be provided at the best and stable level. The total Internet Broadband capacity at UPM is 10Gbps which is subscribed from a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) to cover the average use of 10,000 network equipment (computers, smart phones and others) at any one time. There are two types of Internet access in UPM: wired and wireless.

 

Wired 
A network system based on Gigabit Ethernet technology with speeds from 100Mbps and 1000Mbps/1Gbps.

The UPM network system, better known as UPMNet, involves the main campus network that connects more than 20,000 network nodes in the Serdang and Bintulu campuses with the concept of 3 layer switching (Core, Distributed and Access). This wired network infrastructure uses Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet technology that provide speeds from 100Mbps and 1000Mbps/1Gbps to users. The connection between these switches uses UTP Cat5/6 and fiber optic throughout the Serdang and Bintulu campuses.

 

Wireless
The wireless access network on the UPM campus uses WiFi5/6 technology.

UPM provides wireless Internet access facilities in the faculty area and Student Residence College for free to staff and students. This wireless facility covers the college area known as the service name PutraHotspot and in the faculty and student focus areas around the campus as the service name PutraNet. WiFi services cover approximately 80% coverage throughout the campus. The WiFi offered uses WiFi5/6 technology with 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz frequencies and an identity verification system using UPM-ID.

 

Computer Training Room

 

The InfoComm Development Centre (iDEC) is an ICT training provider appointed by the UPM Registrar’s Office. iDEC has the role of managing ICT training and providing basic facilities, such as a computerised training laboratory, to meet the teaching and learning needs of UPM staff.

There are two (2) computerised training rooms, the Exa Training Room and the Zetta Training Room, located at iDEC Alpha. Exa Training Room has 15 computer units, and Zetta has 30 VDI computer units. All these training laboratories are equipped with laptops for instructors, LCD projectors, printers, screens, PA systems, and internet access facilities, while the basic software provided is Microsoft Office, SPSS, SAS and some multimedia software. The above training rooms are free if they are used for official university training purposes involving UPM staff.

Telecommunication Network System

 

The UPM Telecommunication Network System, known as PutraComm, fully utilises Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology with the support of the existing UPMNet infrastructure. The VoIP system combines and facilitates the use of the latest communication technology hardware, which combines real-time communication applications such as telephony, video conferencing, and instant messaging with non-real-time communication applications such as e-mail, voice mail, SMS, and fax-to-email, and is able to implement various online applications on VoIP phones (e.g., through Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology).

The VoIP phone system utilises and maximises the use of the UPMNet network infrastructure (optical cables, wifi and network switches) that is already available throughout the UPM campus. In addition, the PutraComm application system based on Android and Apple (iOS) was also introduced, which provides convenience to smartphone users. This system has a big impact because of the advantages of mobility and ease of use, as well as cost savings.

Video Conferencing Services

 

Video conferencing is a form of two-way transmission containing voice, video and data between two different locations as if the users are communicating in the same place. Audio and visual transmission activities can also be implemented with additional functions such as document sharing, computer display and virtual screens. The video conferencing services offered are divided into two methods, namely video conferencing services using hardware and video conferencing using software.

    1. Video conferencing using hardware
      The use of video conferencing equipment (H.323 terminals) such as Aethra, LifeSize, Radvision and Yealink. This tool can be used to communicate via video conference between UPM Serdang Campus and external agencies that use the H.323 protocol standard.
    2. Video conferencing using software
      Video conferencing room services equipped with cameras and microphones for use with video conferencing software specified by the user as agreed in the submitted application. Video conference software that users often use are such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom. For software that requires a license, users need to subscribe to the license themselves.
