SERDANG, Jan 8 – Being involved in sports and concentrating on studies would be two challenging tasks, even if they were done separately.

However, they were not an issue for two national athletes.

Athletics athlete, Mohamed Farhan Hafsyam Zahid and bowling athlete, Syazana Aqilah Lokman, had successfully graduated from the Bachelor of Communication programme, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, at the 44th Universiti Putra Malaysia Convocation Ceremony today.

The married couple were ecstatic to finally attend the Convocation Ceremony, which was postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mohamed Farhan Hafsyam, who represented Malaysia at the 2017 SEA Games and a silver medallist in the 2018 ASEAN University Games, said his family initially was not convinced of a career in sports and encouraged him to put more focus on his studies, but his success had changed their perception entirely.

Meanwhile, it was rather different for Syazana Aqilah, who represented UPM in the MASUM and SUKMA tournaments, as her family was very supportive of her pursuing both studies and a sports career.

Although the field of study that the couple embarked on had no affiliation to sports, they strongly felt that it was an added advantage and an obligation to seek new knowledge. - UPM
