UPM received 5 stars rating (Excellent University) under the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education (SETARA) and 6 stars under the Malaysian Research Assessment Instrument (MyRA) for research, development, and commercialisation
efforts.

Caring IPT Towards Senior Citizens

In conjunction with National Seniors Day 2012, UPM was honoured as “Caring IPT Towards Senior Citizens” through its contribution and involvement in “Lifelong Learning” and a certificate of appreciation by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia.

 Fellowship of Academy of Science Malaysia

3 scientist from UPM were conferred Fellowship of Academy of Science Malaysia. They were Datin dr. Faridah Hanum Ibrahim (Dean of Faculty of Forestry), Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamed Shariff Mohamed Din (Director of Putra Science Park) and Prof. Dato' Dr. Kamel Ariffin Mohd Atan (Director of Institite of Mathematical Research).

AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation  

Faculty of Economics and Management & Putra Business School (formerly Graduate School of Management) managed to achieve accreditation in business programme from AACSB. UPM was the 1st university in Malaysia and 6th in South East Asia to achieve this.

Gold Medal in Developing Solutions for Developing Countries competition.

6 graduates students of Food Science and Technology Faculty gained gold medal in Developing Solutions for Developing Countries competition organized by Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) on June 25-28th, 2012 in Las Vegas Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Top Research Scientist Malaysia

12 scientists from UPM were announced as ‘Top Research Scientist Malaysia’ (TRSM) 2012 in 2012 Conferment of Fellowship of the Academy of Science Malaysia. They were selected based on their research performance and contribution towards economic improvement and community sustainability.

MOHE Entrepreneurial Awards (MEA)

UPM wins 2 prizes in the first edition of MOHE Entrepreneurial Awards (MEA) 2012 for university category; Entrepreneurial Impact and student category; Best Student Enterprise in MOHE Entrepreneurial University of the Year Award 2012.

Overall Winner for SUKIPT

UPM was announced as the overall winner in Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (SUKIPT) among 101 Institute of Higher Learning by dominating the games with 52 gold, 26 silver and 21 bronze medals. Chui Lai Kwan, UPM’s swimming athletes also was honoured as SUKIPT Sportswoman.

Malaysia GreenTech Awards

Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water choose UPM as the winner of Malaysia GreenTech Awards 2012 in GreenTech University category.

Winner of MASUM Hockey League

UPM’s Hockey team defend MASUM’s Hockey League championship in 2012 for the fifth year in a row.

UPM mosque grabbed first place category in Islamic Shrines / Mosque in the competition of Clean and Beautiful Town organised by MPSJ.

7 golds, 6 silvers and 2 bronze medals and 1 INPEX, USA special awards in ITEX 2012.

UPM was awarded with 7 golds medals, 6 silvers, 2 bronze and  a special awards from INPEX, USA in 23rd International Invention, Innovation & Technology (ITEX).

The Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards

Prof. Madya Dr. M. Iqbal Saripan was awarded The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award (TOYM) 2012 for Medical Innovation category.

Excellent Library Award

UPM’s Sultan Abdul Samad Library wins the Excellent Library Awards for Big Library Category.

National Intellectual Property Award 2012

UPM wins National Intellectual Property Award 2012 for Organisational Category (Government and Private). This is due to UPM’s contribution in developing technologies, research and innovation to the country.

Malaysians Universities Sports Council  (MASUM) Awards

5 UPM students, which were also the national athletes, wins top awards in MASUM.

Accolades Awards MAPIM

Former UPM’s Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Radin Umar Radin Sohadi, achieved the Accolades Awards MAPIM (Malaysian Scholarly Publishing Council) for his efforts and support in developing and raising the dignity of Malaysia scholarly publications when leading MAPIM.

National Fellowship  Award for Women in Science from L'Oreal Malaysia

Prof. Madya Dr. Wan Azlina Wan Abdul Karim Ghani and Dr. Firdaus Mukhtar received National Fellowship  Award for Women in Science from L'Oreal Malaysia both from research on hydrogel development based on biochar composite and research on the effects of cognitive behaviour therapy for female patients with anxiety disorders.

National Academic Awards

Prof. Dr. Mohd Adzir Mahadi, lecturer from Faculty of Engineering, was selected as the receiver of National Academic Awards 2011 for Most Promising Academic Category. While, Prof. Dr. Mohd Hair bin Bejo, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine received the Innovation and Commercialization Awards.

Special Achievement Award for Truck of the Year 2012

Dato’ Ir. Dr. Radin Umar Radin Sohadi, former Vice Chancellor of UPM was honoured for Special Achievement Award for Truck of the Year 2012 New Straits Times-Shell Rimula Truck of the Year event in recognition of his pioneering and efforts in road safety issues. 

WIF-Kuala Lumpur Innovation Awards and Special Award (BioInnovation Awards)

 UPM collected 6 gold medals, 4 silver and 4 bronze in WIF-Kuala Lumpur Innovation Awards and also with 3 Special Award (BioInnovation Awards).

UPM develops device to keep track of Alzheimer patients

Four researchers from the Institute of Gerontology (IG), UPM, Prof. Madya Sr. Dr. Abdul Rashid Mohamed Shariff, Prof. Madya Dr. Ahmad Rodzi Mahmud, Dr. Zaiton Ahmad abnd a graduate student, Mohd Fadhil Abuhan developed a device called Alzheimer’s-Real Time Location System (A-RTLS) using low radio frequency to monitor the movement of Alzheimer patients.

UPM found an innovation to replace wood with bamboo.

UPM innovate “V-Grooving” Cutter Technology. The “V-Grooving” method flattens bamboo for use as boards, flooring and as a substitute for multi-purposes in the wood-based industry.

Autonomy implementation in 4 areas

 Ministry of Higher education with the agreement from the Cabinet gives Autonomy to UPM in 4 areas that are Institution Governance, Finance and Wealth Creation, Human Resources and Academic Management and also student enrolment.

UPM Innovation in ‘Malaysian Innovators- Everyone can Innovate’

UPM vaccine research on Newcastle Disease Vaccine (NDV4-UPM Vaccine) has been included in the book, “Malaysian Innovators – Everyone can Innovate”. The innovation is a research by UPM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International), Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris and Prof.Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Latif Ibrahim.

Highest grant of Knowledge Transfer Program (KTP) among IPTA

UPM managed to receive 17 projects including 1 flagship project (industry) with a total of RM2,356,734.75 which is the total of KTP project grant and was highest among other IPTA’s.

The Centre of Excellence for Animal Welfare

UPM was selected by Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry as a Centre of Excellence for Animal Welfare.

5 Stars Rating for UPM Website UPM shows an improvement in terms of UPM website and portal preparation by rated 5 Stars with 3rd place among 12 bestest between 20 Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) in 2012 as compared to 10th place with 4 stars rating during the previous year.
